Empowering day for moms and daughters at RDC

Feb 3, 2019 | 10:55 AM

A day of empowerment for mothers and daughters was held Saturday at Red Deer College.

The 8th annual ‘Power of a Girl’ conference was combined with the ‘Dream It Be It’ event, both of which were put on by Soroptimist International of Central Alberta.

Soroptimist member Bonnie Vestrum, clad in a Wonder Woman-inspired t-shirt, explained that the day included information for participants around stress, anxiety, drugs, where to go for help, and financial literacy.

“We are women helping women and we do our best. We certainly have no objections to anybody else, but that just happens to be our thing, and we want to educate and empower the women in our community and around the world,” she said.

The event’s keynote speaker was Amy Roscoe, a Soroptimist from Chilliwack, BC who recently published a book called Be Your Own Super Hero.

“Amy’s message is that everyone has superpowers and everyone is a superhero, so to embrace that and move on into the future with a positive can-do attitude,” said Vestrum.

“Attitude changing is part of it, but one of the underlying goals with all of our programs and with Soroptimist InternationaI all over the world is gender equality; levelling the playing field for women, so there’s no such thing as “a man’s job.”

Vestrum believes there has been some progress in that area, and though the younger generation seems to get it more than past generations, it can still be tough for anyone who’s already 15 and had to hear that mindset their entire life.

“Advertising is one area that could use improvement,” she added. “There are a billion products out there to make yourself better, but there’s nothing in the advertising that says you’re already good or already what you need to be.”
