“We’d like to see that cost lowered. We’d like every lunch to be paid for so we don’t have to fundraise every year. We do have to go out and buy fruit, which is a challenge, but we do receive some donations of vegetables, and we’d like to start providing milk to students,” says Tilbury, who was speaking at an open house on Thursday.

“It’s all about a healthy lunch, and we also need some help as we work with both school boards to help provide nutrition education to empower children to identify what is and isn’t healthy to eat at home.”

Val Jensen, who is serving again as event coordinator for the Fun Run, says she fell in love with The Mustard Seed two years ago.

“My heart just said this is our charity. 55,000 lunches is a big need and it’s not something you can do once. Kids need to eat every day,” she says.

“We can always say you need to be in better health, but with this run, we’ve got a concrete finish line to train for, and I think we need that; goals we can achieve rather than just striving to lose weight or eat better. It’s about exercise.”

This year’s event will feature a new family 3 km portion sponsored by the Move Your Mood program. Fathers, husbands and sons are encouraged to register for that race.

Last year, the event raised $35,000, but Jensen adds that with the tough economy, they’ve set a more conservative goal of $20,000.
