Youths charged in Ponoka vandalism incident

Jan 25, 2019 | 10:51 AM

Mounties in Ponoka are crediting members of the public in helping them arrest a pair of youth accused of vandalizing property in the community this week.

On Jan.22, Ponoka RCMP arrested two youth and laid charges following an incident of vandalism at Centennial Park.

At 2:02 p.m., police say a 9-1-1 call was received that three youths were throwing objects and spray painting other people’s personal, as well as public, property.

RCMP responded and took two males into custody.

However, while lodging one of the males into the police detachment, Mounties say one suspect was resisting and engaged in a fight with the arresting officers but no one was injured.

Charges have been laid against two youth who cannot be named.

A 17-year-old faces two counts of mischief under $5,000, five counts of fail to comply with a condition of an undertaking or recognizance and one count of assault on police officer.

Following a judicial interim release hearing, RCMP say the youth was released to attend court on February 13.

Also, a 15-year-old is charged with two counts of mischief under $5,000 and is scheduled to appear in Provincial Court on March 13.

“A call from the public was instrumental in us locating these youth and affecting arrests” says Sergeant Chris Smiley of the Ponoka RCMP Detachment, in a press release. “Engagement like this from the citizens of Ponoka helps the RCMP work towards crime prevention in our community.”
