“It was a good fight. I won a couple rounds but just didn’t get the decision we hoped for,” O’Connell recalled.

His most recent fight was in Edmonton last September, a unanimous decision win over Jesus Laguna.

The 30-year-old says he has a good read on O’Reilly heading into their title bout.

“He’s a tough kid. He’s undefeated (13-0). He’s lanky, tall, likes to jab a lot.

“We’re well prepared for him. I can’t say I’ve ever had a camp this smart (and) I’ve never felt this strong. I’m ready for this one.”

O’Connell, who sports a 13-2-1 professional record which includes 11 knockouts, has really worked on his mental preparation heading into this weekend’s title fight.

“The things we’ve done are things I’ve never done before. Doug Rowe is my sports psychologist and we’ve done a lot of mental drills. I can’t be shook… I’m feeling stronger and more confident.”

How confident is he? Well, about as confident as you can be.

“100 per cent. There’s not a chance of this fight being anything other than a win.”

A viewing party for the fight is being held at JJ’s Kitchen and Bar.
