Pro-pipeline convoy to Ottawa cancelled

Jan 14, 2019 | 2:37 PM

A cross-country convoy in support of the oil and gas industry has been cancelled.

Red Deer-based Rally 4 Resources and Calgary-based Canada Action were planning the convoy to leave Calgary on February 15 and arrive in Ottawa five days later, with stops in Regina, Winnipeg and Toronto along the way.

However, organizers issued a statement Monday saying they’ve had to cancel the event.

“We would like to recognize the overwhelming support and courage that so many Canadians from coast to coast have expressed in their desire to participate in the Resource Coalition Convoy to Ottawa,” read a statement posted on the GoFundMe page for the convoy.

“This event was planned in response to the overwhelming momentum that’s been building from our resource rallies. Unfortunately, we have come to the decision that it is no longer viable to proceed with our planned convoy.

“We cannot confidently mitigate the unexpected challenges associated with this event. As such, we will be issuing full refunds to all of our donors. We greatly appreciate your support.”

Organizers say anyone who made a donation through GoFundMe will receives a full refund within three to seven business days, and that those who donated through the website will be contacted and fully refunded.

Questions can be directed to convoy@canadaaction.ca or 403-990-0401.

Meantime, another convoy planning to leave for Ottawa on February 15 is still going ahead and will now be leaving a day earlier.

Organizers of the Yellow Vest (Official) convoy to Ottawa 2019 say it will now rollout on February 14 following a request from the 2019 Canada Winter Games, which get underway in our city on the 15th.
