Kinsmen extend Dream Home Lottery ticket sales deadline

Jan 3, 2019 | 12:30 PM

The deadline to purchase tickets for this year’s Red Deer Kinsmen Dream Home Lottery has been extended.

Lottery officials confirm the previous deadline of December 31, 2018, has now been extended to February 24 for both the Dream Home Lottery and 50/50 Draw, with the final draws now scheduled for February 28.

Lottery co-chair and Red Deer Kinsmen vice president Chris Klassen says the state of Alberta’s economy has played a role in this decision.

“As well, there is some competition when it comes to lottery homes this year that we haven’t had in the past,” adds Klassen. “And just the uncertainty, lots of people don’t know what their 2019 brings, if they have work to go back to or not. Our ticket sales are down unfortunately this year, therefore, we have requested and have been permitted an extension to this year’s lottery.”

Klassen reminds central Albertans of the lottery’s impact on the community.

“For the amount of time and effort we put into it, it’s not a project that we want breaking even,” he explains. “We want to make money so we can do the donations and help those that need it. Without people buying tickets unfortunately, that limits our capabilities.”

Klassen says 8,600 tickets are made available for the Dream Home Lottery, with nearly 3,600 still remaining.

“At last count we were at approximately 55 per cent sold,” says Klassen. “We also are running a 50/50 cash raffle which currently is doing alright. The 50/50 as of yesterday was $87,000 and can continue to grow until the end of February unless we sell-out before.”

Klassen says these numbers are down significantly from 2017.

“In recent years, for sure the last 10, we haven’t had to ever request an extension,” states Klassen. “But we’re down more than 25 per cent from where we were last year and the year before, so we’re really feeling it this year. Hopefully with the community’s assistance, we get that number up, we sell more tickets and raise more money.”

Klassen says Red Deer Kinsmen tries to serve the community’s greatest needs though this lottery.

“We put a huge emphasis on the kids and the youth of Red Deer and area,” states Klassen. “A lot of funds that we raise go towards the Food Bank, Mustard Seed, Youth HQ, numerous sporting clubs, the orchestra, Camp Alexo, Pond Hockey, Minor Hockey, Aspire Special Needs, Festival of Performing Arts, Red Deer Royals, KidSport, Festival of Trees. These are all things we would raise money to help with.”

As for the True-Line built grand prize Dream Home, it’s valued at $750,000 and located at 157 Longmire Close in Laredo.

The one-and-a-half story home is over 2,600 sq.ft, has 4 bedrooms, 3 bathrooms, a theatre room and developed garage among other features.

Additional prizes include a 2018 Ford Mustang Premium, a trip to Mexico and 50/50 draw which could pay out up to $150,000 if sold out, among other prizes.

Klassen says tickets can be purchased online, at Red Deer and area Servus Credit Unions, Sproule’s Mountview I.D.A. or at the Dream Home itself on Saturdays and Sundays between 1:00 – 5:00 p.m.

50/50 tickets are $10 for one, $25 for four or ten tickets for $50.

Dream Home tickets are $100 for one, $250 for three and five tickets for $375.

All proceeds raised stay local to Central Alberta.
