EDMONTON – A 26-year-old man who had been living in Edmonton since his early teens has been identified as the person shot and killed by city police this week.

Devlin Kyle Neyando, who was originally from Fort McPherson in the Northwest Territories, died at the scene when officers opened fire Wednesday evening outside a townhouse on the city’s east side.

Neyando was being sought by police after reports that a 28-year-old woman he knew had been assaulted for several days at the same location.

Police have said they found the woman suffering from injuries when they went to the residence Wednesday afternoon after learning of the alleged assault.

Arrest warrants were issued and police surrounded the townhouse after hearing that evening that the man they were seeking had broken in, but the suspect was shot during a confrontation with officers when he emerged.

An autopsy is scheduled for Friday.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team the province’s police watchdog continues to investigate the shooting.

This was the second police-involved shooting in Edmonton in a week.

Last Wednesday, officers shot a suspect after he refused to get out of a vehicle.
