Property, persons crimes reach five-year low: City stats

Nov 1, 2018 | 11:16 AM

The latest crime statistics released by The City of Red Deer show continued drops in property and persons crime over the past year.

Numbers for the third quarter of 2018 show a 31 per cent drop in break and enters in Red Deer from 1,129 from January to September 2017 to 979 so far this year.

There’s also been a 37 per cent drop in motor vehicle thefts from 1,129 through nine months of 2017 to 728 in 2018.

Theft, possession of stolen property and mischief statistics are also on the decline, according to the 2018 Q3 crime stats. Total property crimes are down 31 per cent from last year and are at the lowest rate they’ve been in the last five years, City officials say.

Persons crimes have also hit a five-year low, according to the latest stats. Robberies are down 29 per cent (116 last year to 82 this year). Assaults are down (1,211 to 1,087) but sexual assaults are up (84 to 113).Motor vehicle collisions are occurring at about the same rate as last year with 2,828 in the first nine months of 2017 and 2.840 so far this year. Traffic fatalities have increased, however, with Red Deer seeing two this year.

Of note, Red Deer RCMP say they’ve seen a three per cent increase this year in the number of calls to their complaint line. This, officials say, indicates the public’s commitment to reporting crime and helping police to target hot spots.

“RCMP understand that crime feels more visible to the community than ever. It can be difficult to believe that crime rates are declining when citizens see so many reports on crime-focused social media sites, and when some businesses keep getting hit by the same handful of career criminals. But the overall numbers are in fact going down, and our commitment is to keep putting the pressure on those repeat offenders and returning them to jail at every opportunity,” says Superintendent Ken Foster, officer in charge of the Red Deer RCMP. “There are so many committed citizens in the community helping police every day, and we thank you for that.”

Total criminal code offences in Red Deer from January –  September 2018 came in at 14,751, lower than at any point in the last five years (2014 – 16,271, 2015 – 16,762, 2016 – 18,945, 2017 – 19,773).

Crime statistics for each Alberta RCMP-policed jurisdiction are gathered by RCMP operations support analysts. These statistics are gathered in the same way for every detachment to ensure they are comparable and meet Statistics Canada requirements.

With regard to Pinpoint, the RCMP’s city-wide crime reduction strategy, between July 10 and October 10 of 2018 Red Deer RCMP conducted 571 checks on targeted people, including 19 identified people on parole and/ or probation and 39 more career criminals with an active history of property crime. RCMP conducted another 1,988 checks in crime hot spots and targeted addresses. During the third quarter of 2018, 104 charges have been laid specific to targets identified through Pinpoint, and 98 warrants have been executed.
