Championship games highlight busy local football schedule

It’s another busy and exciting weekend on the local football scene.

Thursday has a pair of high school consolation games on the docket with Wetaskiwin visiting Ponoka and Lacombe visiting Notre Dame (7 p.m. at Great Chief Park).

It’s a big day Saturday with a number of championship games taking place.

The high school city division final has Hunting Hills battling Lindsay Thurber at Great Chief Park starting at 7:30 p.m. Both teams have also clinched spots in provincials and will play again next weekend – Thurber takes on Grande Prairie in Tier 1 play while Hunting Hills battles Robert Thirsk in Tier 2.

Sylvan Lake hosts Stettler at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday. Sylvan Lake will play in Tier 3 provincials next weekend while Stettler will play in Tier 4.

Strathmore visits Innisfail for 9-man football action Saturday at 4 p.m.

On the bantam circuit, the Notre Dame Cougars and Sylvan Lake Lions will battle in the Tier 2 Final at 4:30 p.m. at Great Chief Park. The Lacombe Raiders and Ponoka Broncs play in the Tier 3 Final at 7:30 p.m. at MEGlobal Athletic Park. Other bantam games Saturday have Hunting Hills visiting Drumheller, Thurber visiting Stettler and Springbank visiting Olds.

The Pee Wee ‘A’ Final has the Lacombe Explosion hosting the Red Deer Hornets. Game time at MEGlobal Athletic Park is at 5 p.m. The winner will advance to play in Tier 3 provincials.

In the Pee Wee ‘B’ Final, Stettler visits Sylvan Lake at 10 a.m.
