CFR begins new era in Red Deer

Oct 30, 2018 | 10:47 PM

After 44 years in Edmonton, the Canadian Finals Rodeo made its Red Deer debut Tuesday night at the Enmax Centrium.

If Tuesday’s opening event is any indication Central Alberta rodeo fans are in for quite a week as all 12 steer wrestlers came out of the chute lightning quick. Kody Dollery of Caldwell, Texas turned in the quickest time at 3.6 seconds. Curtis Cassidy of Donalda and Brendan Laye of Consort were right behind at 3.7 seconds.

Jim Berry of Rocky Mountain House turned in a score of 81.25 in Saddle Bronc, good for fifth place on opening night. Clay Elliott had the top ride with an 86.75.

A CFR veteran, Berry is excited to have this year’s rodeo taking place so close to home.

“It was real special today. Real interesting being this close to home. I’ve been so many times in Edmonton and to come to Red Deer, it’s just different day,” he said Tuesday night after his run.

With the CFR committed to Red Deer for the next ten years, Berry is hopeful it can reach new heights and grow rodeo in Central Alberta.

“When you came into Edmonton, everybody was die hard. Everybody was there for the CFR,” he recalled. “That’s the way I’d like Red Deer to be. If Red Deer embraces it like Edmonton, it will be so a cool event and draw so much support.”

Jake Vold of Airdrie took the day money in the Bareback competition with a score of 85.25. He, too, was impressed with the atmosphere at the Enmax Centrium.

“It’s a lot closer crowd, a full house… but at the end of the day, you’ve still got your rodeo fans, everybody comes here to have a good time, and you’re still qualified for the Canadian Finals Rodeo. When you nod your head, it doesn’t matter where it’s at, you’re trying to win first; that’s kind of how I treat it. But it is a bit different, it’s a neat experience. I hope to watch it grow,” Vold said.

Brothers Riley and Brady Minor from Ellensburg, Washington turned in the fastest Team Roping time at 4.6 seconds.

Stettler’s Riley Warren and Shane Hanchey of Sulphur, Louisiana tied for top spot in Tie Down Roping, each with a time of 7.8 seconds.

Taylor Manning of Yellowhead County won the opening night of Barrel Racing with a time of 13.772 seconds.

And in the Bull Riding, Garrett Green from Meeting Creek, Alberta turned in an impressive 87.25 point ride.

Night two action goes Wednesday at 7 p.m. The Canadian Finals Rodeo wraps up on Sunday.
