DNA evidence leads to arrests a year later in Leslieville Hotel armed robbery

Rocky Mountain House RCMP say they used DNA evidence to identify and lay charges against two suspects in a 2017 armed robbery at the Leslieville Hotel.

The lengthy investigation began almost a year ago following a 9-1-1 call around 4:16 p.m. on October 14, 2017.

Two males reportedly entered the hotel bar wearing masks and coveralls and carrying guns and knives. 

Mounties say several patrons were in the bar at the time and were forced to stay inside during the robbery. 

A large amount of money was taken from the bar and the two men fled in a waiting Dodge Ram truck.

Following months of collecting witness statements, following up on public tips, processing various pieces of evidence and executing warrants, RCMP have charged Harvey James Lee-Bernick, 34, of Red Deer with robbery with a firearm and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Austin Kim Derkatz, 22, of Rimbey has been charged with robbery with a firearm and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose.

Police say both accused are next scheduled for court on October 24 in Rocky Mountain House.

Although the Dodge Ram truck involved in the crime has been recovered, RCMP say the identity of the driver has not been established. That investigation continues.
