Artist paints new murals for Turning Point

A local artist has painted two new murals that now adorn the Turning Point building in downtown Red Deer.

“They got to hearing about my artwork, and they inquired that maybe I could paint a mural, and I agreed,” said Ryan James Allen Willert. “They allowed me to do what I wanted to do on the mural.”

Willert has been working on the murals for just over two weeks. He says that the one mural is designed to be a mural of acceptance and inclusion for the LGBTQ community.

“I put the Alberta symbol on it with LGBTQ colours going through the symbol,” Willert explained.

Willert describes the second mural he painted as “abstract tribal work.”

He says Turning Point’s connection to the homeless community is something that hits close to home.

“I (also) used to live on the streets years ago, so this place has a soft spot in my heart because of their compassion towards, I don’t like to call them street people, but people.”

Willert says he is more than glad to do his part to support Turning Point in the work they’re doing.

“I’m hoping that the community looks at these people not as a problem to sweep under the rug, but everyone is a human being.”

Willert has an upcoming solo art show Nov. 3 in Calgary at the Dandelion restaurant (1048 8 St. SW) from 6-9 p.m.
