Toy run for Christmas Bureau

Cash and toys were raised for the Red Deer Christmas Bureau on Saturday during a very busy fourth annual Outkasts Car Club classic car show and toy run.

The event went on in the Parkland Mall parking lot despite the near freezing temperatures.

Tom Reed with the Outkasts Car Club spoke about making sure every child has a new toy at Christmas.

“There are a lot of families out there that deserve a Christmas, but just can’t afford to make it happen,” he said. “We love to do something like this. In the past three years, we’ve raised over $6400 and 500+ toys.”

More on how to contribute to the Christmas Bureau is at RedDeerChristmasBureau.ca.

— Alberta Youth Choir hold rehearsals

Choir Alberta held its initial rehearsals on Saturday for the 2018 edition of the Alberta Youth Choir.

The rehearsals were held at Red Deer College.

The 75 singers chosen from approximately 160 auditions come from close to 50 different programs around the province.

“Choir Alberta puts a call out for auditions every spring,” says Brendan Lord, executive director with Choir Alberta. “Our members and other conductors and music teachers across the province see that and encourage their students, the ones who are really developing skills or have a choral background already, to audition. The audition process is fairly rigorous.”

The singers, aged 16-22, must submit a recorded audition and then go through an interview, each of which is reviewed by a panel before they are selected for the youth choir.

In October, singers will go to Music Conference Alberta in Edmonton and perform in a gala as part of the Alberta Emerging Musicians Festival. Then the group will do a tour through towns in northern Alberta.

— Jersey unveiled for Bruins alumni game

Organizers with a major fundraiser and charity hockey game planned for next year have unveiled the special jerseys the local team will wear.

On March 17, in cooperation with The Mustard Seed Red Deer and Shalom Counselling Centre, the Boston Bruins Alumni will play a charity game at the Enmax Centrium. Proceeds will be split between the two other partnering organizations.

On Saturday, the Red Deer Hope Stars revealed the green unis they’ll wear (seen above) during an impromptu street hockey session at the Red Deer Farmer’s Market.

As well, the Piper Creek Optimist Club, which hosted the street hockey on Saturday, announced they will be putting on a more organized street hockey tournament the same day of the charity game next spring.

VIP tickets to the hockey game are on sale now through ticketsalberta.com.
