McKinlay ties for 6th at Canadian Junior Boys Golf Championship

MEDICINE HAT, AB — Trailing by five strokes entering the final round of the 2018 Canadian Junior Boys Golf Championship, Christopher Vandette knew the odds were stacked against him.

But that didn’t phase the 16-year-old from Beaconsfield, QC, who carded a final round 65 to win the national title by two strokes at the Medicine Hat Golf & Country Club on Thursday.

“I thought I needed at least four-under for a playoff,” said Vandette, who finished third in last year’s national tournament. “Which, I guess I was actually right, second place was even.”

Vandette signed off on his 65 more than an hour before the final group shook hands on 18. His tournament score of -2 is the only score under par following the four rounds.

“I knew the first few holes are very get-able here,” the Summerlea G&CC member added, who became just the 10th player in tournament history to win the Junior and Juvenile Boys title. “The first six holes you can get on a roll, which I did.”

He did so with authority, with birdies on four of his first six holes on route to a five-under 31 on the front nine. Vandette’s unblemished round was capped with a birdie on the par-4 15th — which played as the fifth hardest hole through the week — and a smooth up-and-down for par on 18.

His 65 matches the course record, set by Kelly Risling.

“That’s awesome,” he added. “I think I might only have (the course record) at one other place. It’s really cool to match the course record, especially at this event.”

Brady McKinlay of the Lacombe Golf Country, who led the tournament through two rounds, finished tied for sixth. McKinlay shot 72 on Thursday to finish at 2-over for the tournament.

Chandler McDowell and Carter Graf of the Red Deer Golf and Country Club finished tied for 11th at 4-over. Graf turned in a final round score of 72 while McDowell shot 72.
