Red Deer Tennis Club hosting Outdoor Junior Provincials

Jul 27, 2018 | 4:15 PM

The best young tennis players in Alberta are ramping up competition at the MNP Outdoor Junior Provincials taking place in Red Deer this week.

The tournament began July 21 at the Red Deer Tennis Club and wraps up Saturday with the finals in each division getting underway at 8:00 a.m.

Tournament Director Lyle Jacobson says over 200 players are taking part, mostly from Edmonton and Calgary but adds Red Deer has a few as well, including Michael Robinson, Lucas Poirier and Isaac Denzil Aspinall.

He hopes all the players however enjoy the experience and pressures of playing in a top-notch tournament such as this one.

“Also accumulating points towards ultimately getting on Canada’s team,” adds Jacobson. “They love it, they’re having a good time. Everything is pretty casual really for such an important tournament.”

He encourages members of the public to check out some games, describing the play as very competitive.

“It’s a golden opportunity for people in Red Deer to see quality tennis,” explains Jacobson. “The payers are anywhere from 10-years-old to 17-years-old.”

He says for anyone interested, the Red Deer Tennis Club does offer lessons to the public.
