New pedestrian bridge to be installed in Coronation Park

Jul 16, 2018 | 11:38 AM

Work is set to begin this month on replacing the Waskasoo Creek pedestrian bridge in Red Deer’s Coronation Park.

City officials say the project is scheduled to begin July 25 with an estimated completion date of August 30.

Although the existing bridge is said not to pose any immediate risk, it did receive a low structural condition rating in the City’s 2013 Waskasoo Park Bridge Structural Review, a detailed structural review of 26 pedestrian-type bridges in the Waskasoo Park system.

As a result, officials say the bridge will be replaced to ensure user safety and the long-term sustainability of the trail in that part of the Waskasoo Park system.

It’s expected the bridge will contain sustainable materials and mimic the design of the south bridge replaced in the park in 2015.

This means detours will be in effect, with users able to cross Waskasoo Creek by the main road on 55 Street or by the South Coronation Park pedestrian bridge between 45 Avenue and 46 Avenue.
