Tickets issued as RCMP boat patrol returns to Wabamun Lake

Jun 22, 2018 | 9:48 AM

Stony Plain RCMP along with Stony Plain District Fish and Wildlife Enforcement Branch conducted their first join operation of the summer on Wabamun Lake last weekend, resulting in a dozen tickets and warnings.

Members checked 30 to 35 boats with approximately 50 per cent of the boats checked being not in compliance with regulations. A number of boaters also had a lack of safety equipment on board.

Stony Plain District Fish and Wildlife Enforcement undertook 12 enforcement actions that included violation tickets and warnings.

RCMP members also seized liquor and would like to reminded the public about the laws regarding open liquor.

Boaters are reminded that:

•         Boat drivers require a Canada Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC).  This card proves you have taken and successfully completed an approved boating safety course that is required for pleasure craft operators.
•         Fishing licences are required.
•         In Alberta, the fines and penalties for operating a boat while under the influence of alcohol or drugs match the fines and penalties for operating a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol or drugs. There is NO difference between drunk driving and drunk boating.

Wabamun Lake is approximately 53 kilometres northeast of Drayton Valley.
