Officials are calling the latest ‘7 Cities’ conference in Red Deer a success.

More than 350 delegates from across Canada came together in Red Deer this week to learn about methods different communities are using to combat homelessness.

It was hosted by the ‘7 Cities on Housing First and Homelessness.

“We are working together to help vulnerable populations within our province,” said Tricia Hercina, Acting Social Planning Manager with The City of Red Deer. “The 7 Cities Conference is about collaborating and focusing our efforts to find innovative housing solutions to meet the individual needs of those experiencing homelessness.”

This was the 11th year of the conference, which featured over 60 presenters, panel members and keynote speakers.

Communication and collaboration were emphasised as key at all levels of services. As well, attendees shared best practices and successes in efforts to end homelessness.

“We continue our collective work toward ending homelessness,” said Red Deer Mayor Tara Veer. “We acknowledge it’s a formidable goal but we are committed to ensuring Red Deer is a place where safe, accessible and affordable housing is available for those in need, along with the appropriate services and supports that fit the needs of the people and community we serve.”

The City administers funding from the federal and provincial orders of government to community agencies and partners who provide support services and affordable housing.

The ‘7 Cities’ have been at work together since 2001 working to end homelessness across Alberta.
