Rotary Club of Red Deer lends financial hand to graduating students

“A lot of these students are very high-performing but maybe not at elite status,” he explains. “It’s also meant for those that have a financial need.”

Joshua Young, a grad at Lindsay Thurber whose family moved to Alberta in 2005, says he’ll be going to the U of A to pursue civil engineering.

“The scholarship is a way of recognizing that we have dreams and that sometimes we have obstacles that we have in our way. This will smooth the way for us,” he says. “I come from a single-parent home so financial need has been something that I’ve struggled with, and same with my sisters.”

Notre Dame grad Grace Sporea will be attending Red Deer College in the fall to study biology.

”This means an opportunity,” she says. “It means I can pursue my dream without having too much to worry about with certain finances since I have siblings in post-secondary right now. This really helps.”

The first Rotary Career Opportunity awards were handed out in 1996. They are disbursed in conjunction with the Red Deer and District Community Foundation.

Applicants are scored on their community involvement, extra-curricular participation, academic efforts and financial need.
