Thousands of families enjoy Central Alberta Children’s Festival

Thousands of local families converged on Rotary Recreation Park in Red Deer for the 12th Annual Central Alberta Children’s Festival on Friday and Saturday.

The event featured live entertainment, face painting, a bbq, refreshments and an impressive variety of children’s activities in one of the city’s most beloved park spaces.

Organized by Family Services of Central Alberta, Executive Director Judy Scott says the festival is aimed at giving parents an excellent opportunity to just unplug, play with their kids and enjoy the beauty of the park.

“We have music and we have dance and balloon twisting and face painting,” exclaims Scott. “We have the tee pee here this year, we have snacks for everybody and water to keep them hydrated and just good fun in different activities from our community partners.”

She describes the event as a bit of a ‘Friend-raiser’, largely made possible from the support of sponsors and volunteers.

“All of us here in the park are donating our time, volunteering our time, even all the activity areas under the tents and so they’re just hoping to make some new friends,” Scott says. “All of the money that we get at the festival goes right back into next year’s festival. So we have our gate admission, it all just goes back so we can do it again next year!”

“We’re a really busy society and we’re 24-7 all the time,” continues Scott. “I think sometimes as parents we just getting busy doing the things that we need to do as parents and this is just a great opportunity to have fun. Lots of parents do take that opportunity but you know, for twenty bucks, come and just enjoy the day.”

At the end of the day, Scott hopes those who attended had a great time and maybe made some new friends along the way.

“I hope parents go home and think about how fun that was to just play with their kids.”
