Victims and Survivors of Crime Week: Financial benefits

May 31, 2018 | 11:59 PM

In an effort to raise awareness of National Victims and Survivors of Crime Week, rdnewsNOW is taking a look at three different facets of what is available to someone when they become a victim.

According to the Central Alberta Sexual Assault Support Centre, most victims aren’t aware that financial assistance is even an option.

“They have a two-year window from the date the crime was committed (to apply),” says Outreach Worker Alma Garbe. “They can either get their applications through us at the Support Centre or through their local victim service programs.”

Victims do not have to wait for a charge or conviction to apply for financial benefits.

Criteria for eligibility include being a victim of one of the offences listed by the Victims of Crime Regulation, the victim reporting the crime within a reasonable period of time, and co-operation with the investigation.

More information is available here or by contacting your local victim services unit.

If you believe you are a victim or know someone who is, visit CASASC.ca or your local victim services unit.
