Blood donations rise in honour of Humboldt Broncos

Apr 10, 2018 | 12:14 PM

Clinics across the prairies have seen a spike in the number of blood donations since Friday’s bus crash involving the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team.

Shaun Richer with Canadian Blood Services in Red Deer says they were expecting to collect 80 donations at a clinic held Monday in Rocky Mountain House.

Instead, they collected 120.

“That’s probably a result of the Humboldt situation,” Richer said Tuesday.

“What we do want people to know is that we are open all week if they want to come and make a donation in honour of the Broncos.”

The Canadian Blood Services clinic in Saskatoon was over capacity on Saturday with more than 150 people coming to give the gift of life, nearly double its regular activity.

Calgary’s clinic received 117 units of blood on Saturday, well above the norm of 90 donations.

The Red Deer Blood Donor Clinic, located at 5020 68 Street, is open Tuesday to Thursday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. and on Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
