Addressing psychological issues through a social work lens

Raising community awareness on a broad range of psychological issues and the potential ways of addressing them through a social work lens was the aim of a public exhibition held at RDC on Thursday.

The Photovoice Exhibition allowed RDC Social Work in Health Care students to showcase for those in attendance a ‘first photo’ that illustrated an identified psychological issue that is tied with the social determinants of health. The ‘second photo’ meanwhile illustrated a concrete strategic initiative to address the identified issue from the social work perspective.

Issues presented-on included drug and substance abuse, mental health and disability, gerontology, income, housing and food security and structural and contemporary issues.

Instructor Darnel Forro describes the event as a meaningful way for social work students to convey and articulate their perspectives on a variety of social issues.

“Social work students are mindful that they need to be leaders in a field of raising social awareness and consciousness on these issues that are often silenced,” he explains. “So this is a photovoice-inspired exhibit.”

“The first set of photos is the student’s way of conveying and expressing a particular psycho-social issue that they would like to raise awareness on,” he adds. “The second set of photos and narratives convey a particular strategic initiative that they would like to express in terms of what do they think are possible ways for us to address the psycho-social issues.”

Social Work in Health Care student Alyssa Reimer says her project with Patti LaPointe highlights how mental health and disabilities often go hand-in-hand.

“A lot of times the road is fraught with bumps, stops, turns,” says Reimer. “We’re just trying to highlight that with our project and just shed a light. Kind of reduce the stigma of mental health.”
