‘Take Back the Night’ march takes aim at sexual assault and victim blaming

Mar 28, 2018 | 3:05 PM

A march happening Thursday night in Red Deer is taking aim at the issue of victim blaming with respect to sexual violence and assault.

‘Take Back the Night’ is an effort of RDC social work students who’ve been assigned to host an event which relates to social work practice in the community.

Co-organizer Heidi Coltman says sexual assault is all too common when it shouldn’t be.

“It’s even about while going through the justice system, and having interactions with police, interactions at the hospital, and how re-victimizing and humiliating it can be,” she says.

“We also want to focus on empowering other people who have experienced sexual assault.”

The event begins at 7 p.m. at City Hall Park. It will include speeches and a discussion on the myths and misconceptions around rape. The march will travel through the downtown area before concluding at Rotary Park.

There will be a BBQ and fire there, as well as interactive mural called ‘These Hands are Not for Hurting’ and a candlelight vigil. Participants will also have a chance near the end to share their own thoughts or stories and ask questions.

Participants are also asked to wear purple.

More information is on the event’s Facebook page.
