Generals win another provincial title and Allan Cup berth

Chalk up yet another provincial title and trip to the Allan Cup for the Lacombe Generals.

The Generals handled the Stony Plain Eagles 6-1 Wednesday night at the Gary Moe Auto Group Sportsplex to win the Senior AAA Provincial Final four games to one.

Lacombe moves on to play at the 2018 Allan Cup national championship next month in Rosetown, SK. It’s their 11th trip to the Allan Cup in the last 12 years.

The Eagles came out flying in the first period and would open the scoring on a tip in from Todd Fiddler that eluded Generals goalie Steven Stanford with less than five minutes left in the frame.

It was a much different story in the second period as the Generals took control with four goals.

Keenan Desmet outwaited Eagles goalie Davis Jones before sliding the puck into an open net to tie the game 1-1.

Kyle Bailey put Lacombe ahead with a 4 on 4 goal a few minutes later. Colin Valcourt and Brad Stebner each scored to make it a 4-1 affair through 40 minutes.

Ian Barteaux netted two third period tallies to put an exclamation point on another provincial title for the Generals.

Head coach Sean Robertson was proud of his team’s performance Wednesday night and throughout the provincial playoffs.

“Very proud, when you set out a goal at the start of the year and then when you achieve it,” Robertson said post-game.

“We’ve had a lot go on this year and we’ve had some adversity. We played the right way for the last nine games and we’ve been playing well for a long time. To not take our foot off the pedal, that’s what I’m most proud of.”

From top to bottom, Robertson says winning is the results of a total team effort.

“When you put as much work in as these guys do, as our ownership, our management, and our players, then you’re not afraid to want it and you expect it. When you achieve it, it means that much more.”

The loss of captain Don Morrison to a season ending injury earlier in the year, Robertson admits, is providing the Generals with added motivation to win a fourth national title.

“Donny’s been around longer than, well, anybody. He’s still beloved in our room and he’s still a big part of what we do. He’s our biggest fan right now.”

The 2018 Allan Cup takes place in Rosetown, SK from April 9 – 14. The host Redwings, Bethune Bulldogs, South East Prairie Thunder and Elsipogtog Hawks will join the Generals at the tournament. The Stoney Creek Generals and Whitby Dunlops are battling for the final spot at the championship.
