Sutter Fund Chiefs hosting provincials starting Friday

The Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs are hosting the Midget Female AAA Provincial Championship this weekend.

Four teams are competing in the tournament at the Servus Arena including the Chiefs, Rocky Mountain Raiders, Lloydminster Steelers and St. Albert Slash, last year’s Esso Cup national champions.

The Raiders come in as the top seed after closing the regular season on 15-game winning streak to claim first place in the Alberta Female Hockey League. Nicole Fry (41 points), Chloe Puddifant and Breanne Trotter of the Raiders finished 1-2-3 in league scoring.

The Chiefs finished third in the regular season. Cassidy Maplethorpe finished fourth in league scoring with 30 points.

St. Albert and Lloydminster eliminated the Calgary Fire and Edmonton Pandas to earn the final two spots at this weekend’s provincials.

Red Deer plays its opening game Friday at 11 a.m. vs. St. Albert.

Playoffs (Sunday, March 25)

Bronze Final – 10 a.m.

Gold Final – 12:15 p.m.
 

The winner of the provincial championship will move on to battle the B.C. champion for the right to represent the Pacific region at the 2018 Esso Cup in Bridgewater, Nova Scotia (April 22-28).
