Feb 27, 2018 | 10:00 PM

Lacombe County Council has approved a funding request from the Eckville Arena Operating Association to help repair the roof of the arena’s major mechanical and compressor room.

Association officials say the total cost of the project is $282,052.55, with Lacombe County now committed to chipping in $70,513 or 25 per cent of that.

County officials say this will be funded through their Capital Support of Recreation and Cultural Facilities policy.

Other municipalities approached to help with the cost of the project include the Town of Eckville, Clearwater County and the Government of Alberta.

Association officials say their intent is to develop a funding model that adequately represents usage of the facility.

At the present time, Association officials say there are 305 members with 255 active participants (136 youth, 119 adults).

Numbers released by the Eckville Arena Operating Association show 29 per cent of youth arena users and 30 per cent of adult users are from Lacombe County, second only to Clearwater County at (49 per cent for youth, 33 per cent adult).

Sixteen per cent of all youth who use the Eckville Arena live in town, as do five per cent of adult users.

Clearwater County has tabled a funding request for arena repairs pending a joint meeting with Lacombe County later in March.
