Papa Baldy’s Pizza shop destroyed by vandals

A pizza joint in Red Deer’s West Park neighbourhood is closed after a shocking incident Thursday night.

Red Deer RCMP confirm reports the incident happened at Papa Baldy’s Pizza just after 9 p.m. They also confirm one staff member suffered minor injuries, but it’s said there were three people inside or nearby at the time.

Police say the truck, a black Dodge Ram, was loaded with concrete in the rear box. It reportedly reversed across the Westview Shopping Plaza parking lot and into the pizza restaurant causing the extensive damage. The truck also sustained damage to its rear end.

“While preliminary investigation indicates that this occurrence appears to be intentional, we can’t speculate at this time,” says Staff Sergeant Jeff McBeth of the Red Deer RCMP Detachment. “All efforts are being made to solve this crime and we are looking for public tips. As always, public tips can be crucial to our ability to solve and reduce crimes.”

“I am in total disgust and shock that someone would do something like this and put innocent people in danger,” Mama Baldy says in a post on the pizza shop’s Facebook page. “We thank our lucky stars that there were no valued customers in the store at the time and all my staff are safe.”

Kelly LeBlanc, Assistant Manager at the neighbouring West Park Market, says his heart breaks for the family that owns Papa Baldy’s.

“For her to have to go through this with all she’s been through, it’s just a terrible thing,” he says, referring to the death of Papa Baldy’s owner John last year. “We’re really in shock. Everything has been so close to home, we see them almost on a daily basis. We’re proud to work alongside of them. We’re just devastated.”
