Hunting Hills locked down, evacuated following online threat

Nov 7, 2017 | 10:08 PM

Hunting Hills High School was locked down and evacuated Tuesday night after police say a “veiled online threat” was made toward the school on social media.

The series of events came as approximately 500 students were at the school for the annual Hunting Hills Bike-A-Thon fundraiser for mental health initiatives. The overnight event was cancelled as a result of the threat.

RCMP have not confirmed who posted the threat or what it said. However, there were several Instagram posts that may have been related.

Two of them from the same user (jerald_hicks) read, “I’m gonna shoot up ur bike athon,” and, “imm shoot up the bike athon.”

A third post from another Instagram user (xdman7200) showed a picture of a hand holding several granola bars with what appeared to be a handgun in the background. The caption for the photo read, “Bout to fall through with some snacks for the homies #hhhsbike #hhhsbikeathon.”

“At this point there has been nothing to suggest this [threat] is substantiated, but we are still investigating,” Sgt. Marlene Brown with RCMP Media Relations told rdnewsNOW.

“We take all threats very seriously,” Red Deer Public Schools spokesperson Bruce Buruma said in a statement. “Red Deer Public Schools thanks the support and excellent work of Hunting Hills staff and RCMP in managing this situation and keeping students safe.”

Students were led out of the school under the direction of Red Deer RCMP after 10 p.m.

More details are expected to be released on Wednesday.

Schools across the Red Deer Public Schools district, including Hunting Hills, are closed Wednesday for a previously scheduled Staff Learning Day.
