Mounties say everyone has to bear some responsibility for each other’s safety.

“When vehicles and bicycles collide, it’s often not the case that the fault rests only with one or the other. Tragedy can happen in the blink of an eye, be it a quick-moving cyclist, a distracted driver, or people assuming they have the right of way and not paying enough attention to their surroundings,” says Staff Sergeant Jeff McBeth. “Drivers have the added responsibility, as the larger vehicle, to be extra vigilant of cyclists and pedestrians, who are so vulnerable to injury if they’re struck. Put away your mobile devices, concentrate on your surroundings and always be prepared for the unexpected.” 

Under the Traffic Safety Act, bicycles are considered vehicles, therefore cyclists are required by law to communicate their direction of travel to drivers. Youth under 18 must wear a helmet, though RCMP encourage all cyclists to do so.

Cyclists are also required to dismount and walk their bike when using a crosswalk.
