Ninth annual Grilled Cheese Invitational raises more funds for prostate cancer

Sep 8, 2017 | 2:28 PM

BIG 105 and 106.7 The Drive held their 9th annual Grilled Cheese Invitational on Friday.

The tasty event once again brought in plenty of cheddar for the Prostate Cancer Centre who had The Man Van on site.

The Man Van is Canada’s only mobile PSA (Prostate Specific Antigen) testing program for prostate cancer. The PSA blood test is normally done for men over the age of 40 in conjunction with the beloved digital rectal exam.

David Lunn, a volunteer with The Man Van, says the mobile program has tested close to 30,000 men since 2009.

“Both the blood test, as well as the digital, are important as far as giving an indication as to what’s going on with the prostate,” says Lunn, a survivor himself. “The Prostate Cancer Centre in Calgary services all of Alberta and also we go into Saskatchewan. We’re not government-funded at all, so we do rely on donations. We’re lucky that even with the economic downturn, we’re still able to offer a service like this.”

Peter Michaels, Program Director at The Drive adds the station’s support of the Prostate Cancer Centre dates back to 2004.

“We had a predominantly male audience and that’s one thing that affects males quite heavily,” he points out. “It was nine years ago that our morning show at the time decided to start up the Grilled Cheese Invitational and we just thought it was natural to make the proceeds go to prostate cancer.”

Since 2009, the event has raised between $20,000 and $25,000.

The best booth award went to the team from the Radisson Hotel, most unique sandwich was won by Party Like A Chef for their apple pie-inspired concoction, and Delicious Nectar won for best overall sandwich with their inside out creation.
