Investigation into car wash fire cause continues

Aug 22, 2017 | 11:50 AM

The investigation continues into Friday’s fire at a north Red Deer car wash that seriously injured three men.

It was just before 4 p.m. when a barrel filled with a chemical used to shine tires went up in flames at Lazer Car Wash on 67A Street. Two of the men injured were employees at the car wash while the third was there for a job interview.

It has been determined that the three were transferring the chemical between containers when a flash fire occurred. However, the exact cause of the fire remains unknown at this time.

Witnesses described hearing an explosion when the accident happened but Fire Marshall Wes Van Bavel says there wasn’t any structural damage to support that idea.

Van Bavel says their investgation is made a bit more challenging since they aren’t able to interview the victims, meaning it will likely take longer to nail down an exact cause.

Each man suffered severe burns as a result of the fire. A 34-year-old man was flown by STARS to Foothills Hospital in Calgary in life-threatening condition. The other two were transported to U of A Hospital in Edmonton.

Occupational Health and Safety issued a stop work order for the chemical involved in the fire. Otherwise it’s been business as usual at the car wash which reopened on Saturday.
