A Red Deer man has been banned from driving for one year for leading police on a chase through Red Deer in a stolen truck.

The chase on April 17 of this year saw Mounties use two spike belts in their bid to disable the truck, which had been stolen out of Sylvan Lake.

Blackfalds RCMP were first called that afternoon about an erratic drive near McKenzie Road swerving through traffic, narrowly avoiding collisions with several other vehicles.

After twice speeding away from police, the truck was eventually disabled along Gaetz Ave. near 32 St. and the driver was arrested shortly after trying to flee on foot.

Nicholas Galbraith, 31, pleaded guilty in court last week to dangerous driving. He was sentenced to 21 days in jail, satisfied by time already served. Galbraith also received a $1000 fine and was banned from driving for one year.

Three other counts against Galbraith including possession of cocaine, possession of stolen property over $5000 and driving without insurance were withdrawn.

A trial has been scheduled for a man charged with running an illegal marijuana grow op east of Innisfail.

RCMP executed a search warrant on March 24 at a rural property on Range Road 270 in Red Deer County. The investigation began earlier this year when ALERT was tipped off about the unlawful operation.

Mounties seized 739 plants, weighing just over 182 kilograms, harvested weed weighing almost 54 kilograms, and another three kilos of dried bud. A working hash oil extraction lab and equipment were also confiscated.

Also turned up were eight sea cans outfitted with what was described as sophisticated equipment including high intensity grow lights, fans, air conditioners, CO2 generators, dehumidifiers and light timers.

Shaun Charles Howell, 41, is charged with Production of Cannabis and Possession for the Purpose of Trafficking.

His trial has been scheduled for July 23-24, 2018 in Red Deer.

A couple arrested last year after a home in Timberlands and $900,000 in contents was seized in a drug investigation is going to trial.

Matthew Rose, 32, and Katherine Howe, 21, are charged with laundering the proceeds of crime, possession of property obtained by crime, and fraud.

The Priority Crimes Task Force raided a duplex on Garrison Circle in Garden Heights and a home on Towers Close on April 13, 2016. Two shotguns, a large amount of drugs including marijuana, cocaine, ecstasy powder and pills, mushrooms, hash, and oxy pills were all seized along with nearly $40,000 in cash, drug paraphernalia, and 21 cell phones.

Police said the home at 87 Towers Close, much of the contents including electronics and furniture, and two vehicles were purchased with proceeds of drug sales.

Rose and Howe were said to have further laundered those proceeds of crime through a variety of separate bank accounts and various other schemes.

Their trial will take place in Red Deer court Jan. 21 – Feb. 8, 2019.
