On June 24, Sobeys Inc. held a kick off for two national fundraising campaigns – Canada Screams for Ice Cream and Kids Paying-It Forward.

Canada Screams for Ice Cream raised $277,000 nationally. In Red Deer, Youth HQ is receiving funds to help provide healthy meals and snacks for children.

Janessa McCormack, volunteer resources coordinator with Youth HQ, said the funds raised provide them with a phenomenal opportunity.

“[The funds] will be fantastic for us to be able to use not only with our youth and family events through Big Brothers Big Sisters, but also with our after school clubs where we can provide healthy snacks and something for kids in all of our clubs, not only in Red Deer but in surrounding communities,” said McCormack.

Youth HQ received a total donation of $3200.67, which McCormack said will go a long way for the six clubs in Red Deer and surrounding areas including Delburne, Penhold, Bowden and Innisfail.

Also on June 24, a local youth was selected as the ambassador for Kids Paying-It Forward.

Lilly Forberg, 8, was chosen and decided to donate the $500 to Ronald McDonald House Central Alberta.

Forberg said her decision to donate the funds to the house was an easy one because of her family’s experience when her cousin was born prematurely and required six months of hospitalization.

Alisha Koenig, Forberg’s mom, said she couldn’t be any more proud of her daughter for choosing Ronald McDonald House as her charity. Koenig added that when Forberg’s cousin was in hospital, they went to visit and see the “temporary home” at the Ronald McDonald House in Calgary.

“She was very happy to be able to [make the donation] once I explained what it was for. We sat down and made a list together of local charities, and then I told her she had to choose one,” said Koenig.

Forberg has a desire to be involved in her community, including helping raise money for the skateboard park in her home town of Penhold. Koenig said Forberg has a huge heart and that’s just the type of kid she is.

“Lilly is a great kid. She always thinks of others and wants to make sure everyone is included. She really wants to see a skateboard park built in Penhold,” said Koenig.

When Forberg set her fundraising goals and not only reached them, but tripled them, Koenig said she was shocked and excited. She expects that Forberg will continue to fundraise and help out wherever she can.

Kids Paying-It Forward is an ongoing initiative to provide 150 youth with the ability to donate $500 to a charity of their choice. To date, the program has given away $43,500.
