Alberta’s baseball, basketball teams rolling at Canada Summer Games

A track and field competitor from Olds has reached the podium at the Canada Summer Games in Winnipeg.

Andreas Troschke won bronze in hammer throw on Tuesday.

A pole vaulter from Lacombe came close to winning a medal on Monday as Rachel Hyink, 19, placed fourth.

Team Alberta’s male baseball team, coached by Dwayne Lalor of Red Deer, is in medal contention.

Alberta finished first in Pool A with a 5-1 record, including a 9-5 win over Quebec to wrap up round robin play Tuesday afternoon. They will take on Manitoba in the semifinals on Thursday.

Cooper Jones, 22, of Ponoka and Brandon Woods, 16, of Red Deer both play for the team.

Alberta’s male basketball team, coached by RDC Kings bench boss Clayton Pottinger, advanced to the semifinals with a big 87-66 win over Manitoba in Tuesday’s quarterfinal. Team Alberta takes on B.C. in the semifinals Wednesday.
