RDC grads celebrate 53rd convocation in school’s history

Red Deer College celebrated its 53rd Convocation ceremonies on Friday.

More than 580 out of 1,900 eligible graduates crossed the stage to celebrate their achievements, the largest graduating class in the school’s history.

An Honourary Degree was presented to Dr. Bernie Pauly in recognition for her unparalleled contributions to health care, to training the next generation of nursing students and to supporting people who are marginalized.

Dr. Pauly began her professional journey as a Nursing Diploma student at RDC, and she later instructed in the program. Since then, she has gone on to become a leader across Canada in nursing education and research, with a focus on reducing health inequities in society.

“Red Deer College is proud to bestow this honour upon Dr. Pauly,” says Morris Flewwelling, RDC Board Chair. “Throughout her notable career, she has demonstrated an absolute and total commitment to making a difference in health care, and she embodies the values that are symbolized by a Red Deer College Honourary Degree.” 

Two outstanding students were also be recognized for their exceptional contributions to academics and to the community.

The Red Deer College Foundation Outstanding Student Award was given to Ben Fleury for his leadership and commitment to RDC. Fleury served as interim Students’ Association president over the first half of 2017.

The Governor General’s Academic Medal was presented by Earl Dreeshen, Member of Parliament for Red Deer – Mountain View, to Kelsie Bakker.

Bakker had the highest academic standing of all RDC students this year, as she completed the final year of her diploma-level post-secondary program in Business Administration.
