Development of former Ponoka Hospital site moving forward

Jun 1, 2017 | 6:52 AM

PONOKA- Town Council has given first reading to a proposed bylaw to amend the land use designation of lands located at the north end of 50 Street.

The bylaw is to facilitate the proposed redevelopment of the five-acre site where the former Ponoka Hospital currently stands.

The proposal also addresses a strip of land located directly across the road on 50 Street, which the developer is proposing to turn into a parking lot.

The redevelopment of the old hospital site includes a new three-storey building.

The town has signed a lease agreement that would be used for expanded Ponoka Jubilee Library space, Town offices and Council Chambers, as well a space for a learning centre that Campus Alberta Central is interested in establishing.

The learning centre would bring new post-secondary education programs and courses to Ponoka.

Before council moves on to second and third reading of the bylaw, a public hearing will be held on Tuesday, June 13 at 7 p.m. at the Ponoka County Council Chambers, giving members of the public an opportunity to have their say.

Written comments can be submitted for Council’s consideration by sending them to the Town of Ponoka office no later than 4 p.m. on Wednesday, June 7.

A copy of the Town’s Land Use Bylaw can be viewed on the Town of Ponoka website at www.ponoka.ca/business/planning-and-development/land-usebylaw
