Police dog handlers coming to Red Deer for training seminar

May 27, 2017 | 11:59 PM

An influx of police dogs and their handlers will be in the Red Deer area over the next few days.

From May 29 to 31, Red Deer is hosting the Canadian Police Canine Association spring seminar for the first time ever.

Event organizer and Red Deer Police Dog Services (PDS) Cpl. Dan Block says there will be handler/dog teams from Cape Breton to Vancouver.

“We have 23 dog teams attending. It’s a gathering of handlers from across Canada to come together, share ideas do some advanced training to develop our dogs and our handling abilities,” he says.

A number of teams from Red Deer PDS, which services an area from the BC to Saskatchewan border, will also be taking part.

“I’ve attended several training conferences in the past and I just thought it was an idea of a way to give back to the CPCA,” Block continues. “I’ve taken advantage of training everywhere else, so I thought it was our turn to step up and host it.”

Block adds the reason handlers undertake such extensive training is because the bond between handler and canine is all about trust.

“The handler needs to trust that his partner will be there to help him or her out if the situation dictates, and vice versa.  A handler will spend more time with their dog than with their own family and given that amount of time together, a bond between handler and dog will naturally form.”
