RDPL Adult Literacy Program up for prestigious award

Officials with the Red Deer Public Library have announced their Adult Literacy Program has been nominated for a prestigious award.

The Adult Literacy Program based out of the Dawe Branch has been nominated for the 2018 People’s Choice, You Libraries Minister’s Award for Excellence in Public Library Service.

It’s described as a program that offers training to volunteers who tutor adult learners who struggle with reading and writing. With help from the tutors, the learners also improve their English and gain confidence in their work and social life communications.

In addition, the Adult Literacy Program offers English as a Second Language Communication, Speechcraft and Oral Communications for Foreign Trained Professionals.

Library officials say the award is given out annually to nominated Alberta libraries offering outstanding programs or services, with winners determined by online voting at laa.ca/youaward or rdpl.org.

Voting opens at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, March 19 and continues until 4:30 p.m. on Friday, March 23.

The winner will be announced at the Alberta Library Conference taking place in Jasper National Park April 27.
