RED DEER- The Red Deer area unemployment rate began 2018 the same way it ended 2017.

The local jobless rate for January was 5.5%, unchanged from December.

The Alberta unemployment rose from 6.9% in December to 7.0% last month.

Across the country, the number of jobs in Canada fell by 88,000 in January to give the labour market its steepest one-month drop in nine years.

The net decline helped push the national unemployment rate up to 5.9 per cent in January, from 5.8 per cent the previous month.

Stats Canada reports that while the economy shed 137,000 part-time positions -- that category's largest collapse on record -- the number of full-time jobs increased by 49,000.
