Doors open at St. Joseph and St. Gregory the Great

Sep 1, 2017 | 3:02 PM

A new era has begun in east Red Deer where the doors opened up this week at St. Joseph High School.

The approximately 560 students spent the bulk of the day familiarizing themselves with the building, but were also treated to cake and a St. Joseph t-shirt. Principal Graeme Daniel says the swag will enable students to gain some early school spirit.

“It’s really, really neat to see the energy of the kids in the building,” he says. “A lot of thought and effort has gone in for them, how we maximize space, utilize space and how it matches up with 21st century learning.”

Daniel adds students will be happy to know the school plans on offering a full slate of athetic teams including football next spring. He says with some great coaches coming to the school, they should be competitive despite the mostly younger squads they’ll field.

A 26-year educator and 12-year principal with Red Deer Catholic Regional Schools, Daniel says the school’s opening is a very long time coming.

“Now we get to exhale a little bit and move forward and get on with the business of learning. Today is a really big day.”

This week, St. Gregory the Great Catholic School in Blackfalds also opened its doors for the first time to students in grades Pre-K through 9.
