Smith wins relay gold at World Junior Swimming Championships

It was a fantastic opening to the FINA World Junior Swimming Championships for Red Deer’s Rebecca Smith.

The 17-year-old won gold Wednesday in Indianapolis as a member of Canada’s women’s 4×200 metre freestyle relay team.

Smith teamed up with Olympic sensation Penny Oleksiak, Kayla Sanchez and Taylor Ruck to win the event in a world junior record time of 7:51:47.

Mabel Zavaros is the team’s fifth member. She helped them qualify as the top seed for the final.

“I think it’s pretty cool because all four of us train together and we’re all super close,” Smith said in an interview with Swimming Canada. “Just to have that team atmosphere is pretty great.”

Smith, who now trains in Ontario with the Scarborough Swim Club, will swim in several other events at the championships and is expected to be in medal contention in a number of them.
