A hockey star from Innisfail will be close to home when she starts her pro career.

Defenceman Taryn Baumgardt was selected fifth overall by the Calgary Inferno during Sunday’s 2017 Canadian Women’s Hockey League (CWHL) Draft.

It’s just the latest accomplishment in what has already been an outstanding hockey career for Baumgardt.

She is a three time member of Team Alberta and won gold at the 2010 Canada Winter Games.

The 22-year-old is a former member of the Red Deer Sutter Fund Chiefs (2010-2013).

Baumgardt served as an Assistant Captain of Team Alberta at U-18 Canadian National Championships and played with the U-18 Canadian National Women’s Team in August 2012 that defeated the United States in a best-of-three series

She won the gold medal with the Canada U-18 Team at the 2013 IIHF Women’s U-18 World Championships.

Baumgardt recently graduated from Quinnipiac University in Toronto where she played four seasons with the Bobcats. She earned All-ECAC Hockey Third Team honors as a senior after scoring six goals and 17 points, while also posting a team-leading +20. In her career, Baumgardt accumulated 12 goals and 31 assists for 43 points while also setting the program record for games played with 150. Baumgardt was also named to the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District At-Large First Team.
