Search underway for missing boater on Sylvan Lake

Aug 15, 2017 | 12:03 PM

Sylvan Lake RCMP say efforts are continuing today to recover a 43-year-old male who went missing after his boat overturned near Sunbreaker Cove.

Shortly after 4:00 p.m. on Sunday, police say three adults and a 10-year-old child left Sunbreaker Cove on a boat. A storm hit the lake about ten minutes later, overturning the boat and throwing all four of its occupants from it.

Mounties say three of the occupants were able to stay with the boat with the assistance of their personal flotation devices, and eventually managed to swim to shore.  The remaining male was last seen in the water and it is believed that he was injured as a result of the boat capsizing.

Sylvan Lake RCMP with the assistance of the Sylvan Lake Fire Department, Red Deer County and Alberta Parks Conservation Officers were involved in searching Sunday evening, as well as all day Monday before search efforts were suspended due to inclement weather conditions.
