March sees slight increase in Red Deer region’s unemployment rate

There was a slight rise in the Red Deer region’s unemployment rate last month, but the rate is still lower than in March of last year.

According to the latest figures from Statistics Canada, the Red Deer region’s unemployment rate was 7.0 per cent last month, up slightly from 6.9 per cent in February, but still lower than the rate of 7.7 per cent in March 2023.

Those numbers compare to an unemployment rate of 7.3 per cent in Lethbridge-Medicine Hat, 7.0 per cent in Calgary, 6.9 per cent in Edmonton, 5.5 per cent in Wood Buffalo-Cold Lake, 5.1 per cent in Banff-Jasper-Rocky Mountain House and Athabasca-Grande Prairie-Peace River, and 5.0 per cent in Camrose-Drumheller.

Alberta’s unemployment rate came in at 6.3 per cent in March, up from 6.2 per cent in February, and 5.7 per cent during the same month last year.

The national jobless rate was 6.1 per cent in March, up from 5.8 per cent in February, and 5.1 per cent in March 2023.

Alberta’s employment rate, meantime, was 65.2 per cent in March, down from 65.5 per cent in February, and 66.0 per cent in March of last year.

The national employment rate was 61.4 per cent last month, down from 61.5 per cent in February, and 62.3 per cent in March 2023.
