Saying thank you

Red Deerians show support for RCMP

It was Dan McKenna’s way of saying thank you.

Tuesday morning, McKenna gathered a group of about 40 people to show support for the Royal Canadian Mountain Police.

The group walked from the Baymont Inn and Suites to the downtown Red Deer RCMP Detachment where McKenna read a speech thanking Mounties for all they do to keep the community safe.

McKenna says it was all about sending positive vibes at a time when there’s so much negativity going around.

“Thank you, RCMP, for doing such a wonderful job. You guys are awesome and we just have the greatest police force in the entire world,” he said. “We just want to let you know that some people care about you and we think you do a tremendous job.”

“We’re very proud to serve the community. We live and work in this beautiful city and we’re certainly very thankful to know that the citizens support the work that we do to keep them safe,” says Red Deer RCMP Inspector Holly Glassford.

“Often we’re working with high-risk calls and traumatic events and we don’t always get a thank you, so it’s certainly nice to see.”

The Fair Deal Report recently released by the provincial government includes a recommendation that Alberta explore replacing the RCMP with a provincial police force. McKenna says he has no time for that idea.

“Absolutely not, the RCMP does a great job (and) we need to keep them. They’re our pride and joy in this country.”
