A local Rocky Mountain House woman is embarking on a trip to Peru to fundraise for Cystic Fibrosis.

Kendra McNutt is a massage therapist in Rocky who has two children with the disease.

“I am going to climb Machu Picchu in May of next year,” says McNutt. “Cystic Fibrosis Canada is doing a nationwide fundraiser, so I’m in a group of 30 going.”

From May 25 to June 1, Cystic Fibrosis Canada is hosting the event called Walk to Make Cystic Fibrosis History: Peru Edition.

In order to embark on the journey, participants much raise a minimum amount for the foundation and pay their way to Peru.

“My personal goal is $5000 dollars,” says McNutt. “It’s $4200 that we have to fundraise for Cystic Fibrosis Canada and we have to pay for flights and accommodation.”

McNutt put on a fundraiser at the Rocky Canadian Tire on August 10, and plans to host many more before the trip.

“I have another fundraiser that I’m doing, it’s for a minimum $50 donation. You can pick a card out of a deck of cards and I’ll draw. The grand prize is six treatments with me, as I’m a massage therapist here in Rocky.”

Cystic Fibrosis is the most common fatal genetic disorder in Canada, the median survival age right now being about 50 years old.

McNutt wants to both raise awareness and help people who are living with the disease.

“This once in a lifetime adventure will reach for new peaks in support of Cystic Fibrosis research and care,” says McNutt. “Every week one baby born in Canada is diagnosed with CF through newborn screening, and the funds raised through this trek are helping the over 4,200 Canadians living with this disease.”

It is estimated that one in every 3,600 children born in Canada has CF.
