Wilhelmina Johanna (Visser) Verkirk
Born on April 5, 1944 passed away on Jan 20, 2024 at the age of 79 peacefully with her family surrounding her at Red Deer Hospice. Her battle with cancer was courageous and she faced each day with a smile and optimism.
Wilhelmina (Joan) was predeceased by her parents Arie and Ida Visser; brother Hudson, and sisters Margaret and Marie. She is survived by her loving husband and best friend Frank Verkirk; daughters Angela (Darren), Connie (George), and Debbie (Grant); grandchildren Kaz, Kaeden (Ashleigh) and Kolby, Kevin (Erica) and Kyle, Kimberlee (Tyler) and Kelly; great grandchildren Brynleigh, Delilah, Lucas, Kyla, Daniel, Rylin, Landyn, and Braeden; brother Richard; nieces and nephews; and friends.
Wilhelmina (Joan) was always up for an adventure. Moving to Port Alice in 1961 opened up a new world. She loved living by the water either at the cabin on Victoria Lake, or waterfront home on Neroutsos Inlet looking across the inlet to the mountain. She had many jobs from running the bowling alley and lounge to Boat Operator to collect water sample for the Pulp Mill till she retired in 1996. Camping, hunting and fishing were always planned each year till 2020. Once retired Wilhelmina and Frank went on an adventure of traveling the states for 3 years stopping in to visit family in Canada along the way, then settling back on Vancouver Island in Campbell River. Loved the surprise visits from her children and grandchildren. Going to bingo to hang out with the girls was part of mom’s weekly enjoyments.
Memorial donations may be made to the Cancer Society, Red Deer Hospice or charity of one’s choice.
