It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Wayne Arthur Read. Wayne was born in May of 1936, in Hanna, AB and passed away peacefully at his home surrounded by family, on April 7, 2020, at the age of 83.
Wayne spent his youth in Hanna, AB, moving to Red Deer, with his mother and siblings in 1951. After graduating from LTCHS, in 1955, Wayne started a 47-year career with Taylor, Pearson and Carson/Acklands. He loved his job, and customers, visiting his shop daily, often with his children or grandchildren in tow, after hours, so they could run the aisles. After retirement, he would spend most every morning at Bower Mall with his buddies for a daily coffee and chat of old times and world events.
Wayne was always involved in many different sports throughout his life, golf, basketball, broomball, fastball and bowling to name a few. His other passions through life included ice fishing and duck hunting with his extended Read family, at Bashaw.
Wayne and the love of his life, Chris, took many exciting vacations throughout the world, but would probably both agree that their yearly jaunts to Las Vegas topped the list as a favorite. In the fall, Wayne, Chris and their children were able to spend a few magical days there, having Wayne tour them around to his favorite small out of the way casinos.
Anyone who was fortunate enough to know Wayne was forever touched by his genuine compassion, his gentle, selfless nature, his extreme kindness and joy for people, especially his family.
Wayne is survived by his loving wife and best friend of 57 years, Chris; Children Jody Read (Randy Van Parys), Jacquie Cummerford (George) and Chris Read (Nancy); Grandchildren Cody (Sheveryn), Riley (Leslie), Adam, Christy, Logan and Taylor; Great-grandchildren Chloe and Leo; Siblings Gail Erickson and Darryl Read (Lynn); and numerous nieces and nephews. Wayne was predeceased by his parents, Arthur and Faye Read.
The family is very thankful to the many people that were involved in Wayne’s health journey; including the staff at both the Central Alberta and Tom Baker Cancer Centres, Red Deer EMS, and both Shannon and Lynn from AHS Home Care.
Memorial service details will be announced at a later date.
Any memorial contributions can be donated to the Central Alberta Cancer Centre, either by mail or by accessing https://www.albertacancer.ca/donate/ (selecting Central Alberta Cancer Centre).
