After a long, full life, Wanda May Snider passed away peacefully at the Red Deer Regional Hospital Centre on Tuesday August 12, 2025 at the age of 87 years.
Wanda was born on the homestead on October 22, 1937. She was raised on a farm just outside of Rimbey, where her love for animals began. As she grew, she worked at the Three Way Chronic Convalescent Home for the aged, until she graduated Grade 12 in 1955. After graduating, Wanda moved to Red Deer, Alberta and began working at the Provincial Training School (PTS Michener Center). There she made many lifelong friends and met her future husband, Dick Snider.
They were married December 18, 1957. During their courtship, Wanda took training to become an MDN (Mental Deficiency Nurse) with the hopes of becoming an RN.
As life does, Mom’s life changed with the birth of her children. Wanda and Dick moved to an acreage southwest of Red Deer in 1961, after Penny and Cindy were born. Rick, Tammy, and Candy came along soon after.
After Dad’s passing in 1985, Mom moved six miles east of Blackfalds to an acreage she purchased with Neil Bawtinheimer. There, she raised cows and goats (all named after her children), horses, which she was especially fond of, chickens, sheep, and potbellied pigs, as well as her beloved dogs, Maggie, Jesse, Muffin, and Pal.
While Wanda loved spending her time on her farm, raising animals, gardening, and making preserves, she also enjoyed a few adventures. She travelled to Vancouver Island (to visit her sister Donna), to Newfoundland (to visit her daughter Candy and family), as well as a trip to Mexico.
Wanda was an incredible poet, even having one of her poems published in a book. Wanda was always happy when friends and family came to the farm for a visit, making sure that they were well cared for during their stay.
Wanda is survived by her five children, Penny Swales, Cindy (Alvin) See, Rick Snider, Tammy (Shawn) MacGuire, Candy (Willie) Yucker, Pat (Perri-Lynn) Bawtinheimer, Dawn (Keith) Hansen; 14 Grandchildren, 16 Great-Grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by her cherished life-long friends, Dawn Racine and Janice Harris.
Wanda was pre-deceased by her husband Richard (Dick) Snider, and her second partner Neil Bawtinheimer; her parents (Albert and Mabel), sisters (Beverly, Donna, Verda, and Carol), brothers (Eddie, Robert, and Garry); as well as two beloved nieces and a nephew.
The family would like to thank the doctors and nurses in the ER, and Units 22, and 32, at the Red Deer Regional Hospital.
A memorial service will be held in Wanda’s honour at the Church of the Nazarene, 2 – McVicar Street, Red Deer, Alberta on Saturday, August 23, 2025 , at 1:00 pm.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made in Wanda’s honor to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Central Alberta,
